How hard is the water in Middle Tennessee? The published numbers

Most articles about hard water in Tennessee are vague on purpose. Here are the actual published figures for the area we work in, and what they mean for your house.

Rutherford County: 11.3 grains, and that is very hard

The Consolidated Utility District of Rutherford County publishes an average hardness of 193 mg/L in its own water quality information. Divide by 17.1 and you get 11.3 grains per gallon. Every hardness scale in the industry calls that "very hard" — it is the top band.

That is not a marketing number and it did not come from us. It is the utility's own figure, and you can go and read it yourself. It is also why so many people in Murfreesboro, Smyrna and LaVergne assume that white crust around a faucet is simply how taps age. It isn't. It is calcium coming out of solution.

Nashville: softer, but treated differently

Metro Water Services draws Nashville's water from the Cumberland River and treats it at the Omohundro and K.R. Harrington plants. Hardness there generally runs nearer 7 grains — still hard, but noticeably less than Rutherford County.

The bigger difference in Nashville is the disinfectant. Metro uses chloramine rather than free chlorine. Chloramine is chlorine combined with ammonia, and the practical consequence is simple: it does not gas off. The old trick of leaving a jug of water on the counter overnight to lose the chlorine taste does very little against chloramine. Removing it properly takes a real carbon bed with enough contact time — not a jug filter, and not a cheap inline cartridge.

Why your street can differ from your county

Middle Tennessee sits on the Central Basin, which is limestone. Water moving through limestone dissolves calcium and magnesium, which is exactly what hardness is. That is the regional baseline.

But the supplier changes the answer. Franklin is split between the City of Franklin and Milcrofton. Parts of Brentwood are on Harpeth Valley, parts on Metro. Spring Hill is on the Duck River. Two houses ten minutes apart can genuinely be on different water.

And if you are outside the city limits — Cannon County, rural Bedford, Coffee, DeKalb — you are quite possibly on a private well, which is a different problem entirely.

What actually settles it

A test at your own sink. It takes about fifteen minutes, we do it free, and you watch the result rather than waiting on an emailed PDF. A county average tells you what to expect. It does not tell you what you have.
